Scuba Diving on SV Unladen Swallow
Red Fish Underwater, LLC
Scuba Diving is the one of the primary reasons we live and work on SV Unladen Swallow. It is an amazing activity that connects us with the marine environment and allows us to see and experience a world few take the time to see and appreciate. It is the world that Jacques Cousteau first introduced us to back in 1968. Brownie and Lee both remember fondly watching his shows Sunday evenings growing up. Lee grew up in the headwaters of Buzzards Bay in Massachusetts and feels a strong connection to the sea.
We first started Scuba Diving in 2005 on a chance opportunity while vacationing in Cancun, MX. Brownie discovered that it was a sport that she could do physically as with some of her service connected injuries she was unable to do many of the activities that we liked to do when we were younger such as Cycling and Backpacking. As we gained experience diving, Lee decided that he should become a professional to encourage others to dive safely and conscious of our environmental responsibilities. We want to dive with others, but we want them to be safe and not destroy the environment we spend so much time and energy to visit and explore.
SV Unladen Swallow is an SSI Dive Boat. That means we are a mobile Scuba Diving Shop and Instructional Center. We have 4 primary missions involving Scuba Diving:
We are a mobile SSI Instructor Development Center focused on bringing more Scuba Diving Professionals into the SSI Ranks as well as helping to Staff SSI Scuba Diving shops within the Caribbean basin with new SSI Instructors that believe as we do regarding safety and environmental consciousness
Our secondary vision is to teach other cruisers how to successfully and safely dive from their boats. Many other cruisers also share the love of the ocean on which they live. We want to make sure that they do so safely and again responsibly. This instruction is focused on Recreational Scuba Diving. We can provide recreational scuba instruction from the basic introduction course "Try Scuba Diving", onto Open Water Diver certification and then into virtually every specialty of use to recreational scuba divers on cruising yachts and while on vacation.
SSI has a whole program involving Marine Ecology. We can lead you through an extensive curriculum to take you through become far more aware of what we will encounter underwater.
Our final mission involves Lee's other passion and that is Underwater Photography. Taking great pictures underwater is one of the most challenging activities undertaken by anyone. Lee has developed a set of custom courses that will take you far beyond the basic introductory course that SSI and PADI both market.
We can also provide basic instruction in Free Diving and of course Snorkling.
